October is already coming to an end, and Halloween is only a few days away! I don’t know about you, but I always save finding a costume until the last minute. The Halloween holiday is all about fun and creativity. Goodwill is a great place to go if you are looking to wear something that no one else will have! Aren’t sure where to begin? Giving back to the community
Did you know that when you shop at Goodwill, your purchases make a positive impact on the community? Goodwill has a mission to change lives through work. Any money that you spend at Goodwill is used to fund training for jobs, programs for persons with disabilities, and any other individuals that may be facing obstacles with employment.
Finding a costume at Goodwill
I personally just found my costume at Goodwill yesterday! My friend and I decided that we wanted to have some fun for Halloween and realized that we didn’t have any costumes! We immediately thought of Goodwill. I mean, why not?! We absolutely love thrift stores, but we also really care about being eco-friendly, and giving back to the community. So it was a no brainer on where we were going to find our costumes. First, we took a pretty good look around store. There were many different Halloween accessories, makeups, and costumes to choose from. Goodwill also has some wonderful children’s costumes. We decided that we would find the base of our costume with fun clothing items, and then add to them with the Halloween accessories. I chose a DIY Tinkerbell, and my friend is going to be the Riddler.
Here are some last minute costume ideas:
Dia De Los Muertos
Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday that originates from Mexico. This holiday takes place on November 1st and 2nd. This is a time to honor the ancestors and loved ones that have passed, and gone to the spirit world. It is believed that the souls of the deceased return at this time to visit families in their homes, businesses and the cemetery. This annual holiday is celebrated through singing, dancing, giving gifts, and building altars.
This awesome Dia De Los Muertos costume was created by Erandeny Torres and she found everything at Goodwill!
Here’s what you will need :
- Long black dress
- Colorful feather boa
- A fun hand held manual fan
- Big and bold gold pearl necklace
- A Dia De Los Muertos style mask for the face (or can also be done with face painting & makeup)
- Black hat with a dark colored bow
- Long black gloves
- Big red flower behind the ear or clipped to the hair
Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter know for her brilliant and vibrant self portraits. Her colorful paintings would speak about things such as the human body, identity, and death. Frida is celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her study of the female form.
Check out this amazing DIY Frida Kahlo costume by Jessie! Jessie loves thrifting, especially at the Sunnyvale store because she always finds name brand stuff-which is hard to find! “The thing I like about thrifting in general, is that you always get that one unique thing that no one else has. DIY costume are also better than store bought costumes because it has that extra touch and flair and sass that store-bought costumes don’t have.” Jessie was able to get her costume in under $30! Score!
Here’s what you will need :
- Long green skirt
- Black Spanish style shirt with floral prints on the chest
- A shawl to go around the shoulders. (She chose blue but any color or print could work!)
- A monkey on the shoulder
- Tie your hair up, and place lots of flowers in the hair!
- Frida is commonly known for her thick brows resembling a unibrow. You could even do makeup creating thick brows to make the look pop!
- Jewelry (fun beaded and colorful jewelry!)
- Black floral shoes
Tinkerbell
In case you aren’t able to find something for those costumes, here is a classic! I absolutely love fairies and glitter. I found a silky light green dress at Goodwill, and then I couldn’t get Tink out of my mind! This costume is simple, but great for last minute and if you are feeling like looking cute and magical.
What you will need :
- Silky green dress (or something similar)
- Green fairy wings (these came with a wand and fairy headband)
- Nude heels
- Gold glitter!!
The Riddler
The Riddler is a fictional supervillain that appeared in comic books. This costume could be confused with the Joker. The difference between the two is that the Joker tells jokes, and the Riddler tells riddles. This is the costume my friend created while we were at Goodwill.
What you will need :
- Purple dress
- Oversized green blazer
- Striped purple stockings
- A black fancy hat
- Black heels
