Abode Services to Join Opportunity Center at 1600 Technology Drive
SAN JOSE – (Dec. 9, 2025) – Goodwill of Silicon Valley announced today that Abode Services, a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, will become the first tenant to lease space in Goodwill’s new headquarters at 1600 Technology Drive in San Jose.
Abode, one of the Bay Area’s largest and most comprehensive homeless-services and housing providers, will occupy one floor of the eight-story, 198,033-square-foot Class A building near San Jose Mineta International Airport. The property, formerly occupied by technology companies, was acquired by Goodwill of Silicon Valley in 2024 for $17 million. The acquisition was made possible in part by a landmark $10 million philanthropic gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in 2020, the largest single donation in Goodwill’s history.
“With the support of our community and government partners, paired with disciplined financial stewardship, we’re transforming this building into a hub that will deliver meaningful impact for people who need it most,” said Christopher Baker, CEO of Goodwill of Silicon Valley. “Our goal is to bring together a collective of nonprofits and innovators who can work side by side to share ideas, build partnerships, and develop solutions. We’re honored to welcome Abode as the first tenant and partner in this vision, bringing critical housing expertise to what will be a center of opportunity and resources.’’
Goodwill operates a regional network of donation centers and retail stores that generate funds for no-cost job training, reentry services, housing support, and other resources. Its core clients include veterans, unhoused residents, people with disabilities, people emerging from incarceration, and others facing barriers to employment.
Abode Services has signed a five-year lease with Goodwill of Silicon Valley at a below-market rate, underscoring both organizations’ commitment to expanding access to high-quality service space for mission-aligned partners.
“We are thrilled to be the first tenant in Goodwill of Silicon Valley’s new headquarters in San Jose,” said Vivian Wan, CEO of Abode. “We embrace Goodwill’s vision to transform the space into a hub for local nonprofits to share ideas and fulfill their collective missions in a spirit of cooperation. We look forward to being the first – but certainly not the last – nonprofit agency to benefit from this innovative new building.”
Goodwill welcomes conversations with nonprofit service providers, community organizations, and philanthropic partners interested in co-locating within the Opportunity Center.
“Every donation and purchase at Goodwill generates real, measurable outcomes such as job placements, reduced recidivism, increased housing stability, and expanded disability inclusion,” said Trish Dorsey, Goodwill of Silicon Valley’s Vice President of Community Engagement. “Our partnership with Abode amplifies that value by bringing housing and workforce services together in one location. It’s a practical, results-driven model for strengthening the social and economic fabric of Silicon Valley.”
Goodwill purchased the property as part of a long-term strategy to relocate from its aging 75-year-old warehouse on North Seventh Street and create an integrated hub for workforce development, training, and community services. The new headquarters will house administrative functions and an expanded suite of programs, marking the first phase of a broader facilities-transformation plan. As part of this effort, Goodwill is also preparing to build a state-of-the-art warehouse to replace its decades-old facility, incorporating advanced equipment and sustainable technologies to improve efficiency and enhance the environmental impact of its reuse and recycling operations.
