National Clean Out Your Closet Week is the nudge you’ve been waiting for: a chance to refresh your space, simplify what you own, and do something genuinely good for your community in the process.
This 7-day plan makes it easy with just one manageable step each day.
Why Donating Clothes Matters
The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to landfill waste. Choosing to donate instead of discard does more than clear your closet. It extends the life of usable clothing, reduces textile waste, and supports a circular economy. In 2025 alone, Goodwill of Silicon Valley diverted 36.3 million pounds of usable goods from landfills, up from 35 million pounds in 2024.
And when you’re ready to donate, Goodwill of Silicon Valley puts your gently used clothing back to work – funding local programs that help people achieve self-sufficiency, reduce recidivism, and lessen reliance on public assistance, strengthening families and neighborhoods while saving taxpayer dollars.
A small act with a long reach.
Let’s get started.
Day 1 – Set Your Goals & Gather Supplies
Start by setting a clear intention for the week.
Do you want:
- A more organized closet?
- Fewer clothes but better options?
- A more sustainable lifestyle?
Gather what you’ll need:
- Donation bags or boxes
- Storage bins
- Hangers
- A laundry basket
Beginning with a plan makes the rest of the week easier, and more successful.

Day 2 – First Sweep
Don’t overthink this one. Do a quick pass through your closet and pull anything that:
- Doesn’t fit
- Is damaged beyond repair
- You haven’t been worn in a long time
- No longer reflect your style
This isn’t about perfection, it’s about building momentum. Trust your instincts and keep moving.
Day 3 – Deep Dive: Organize by Category
Today, take everything out and sort by category:
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Dresses
- Jackets
- Shoes
- Accessories
Seeing similar pieces laid out together often reveals just how much we actually own and helps identify which clothes we rarely wear. You may discover you have five black sweaters but only wear one, or several pairs of jeans that never make it into rotation. Those extras are perfect candidates to pass along through donation.
This step alone can change how you see your wardrobe.

Day 4 – The 12-Month Rule
For everything still in the pile, ask three questions:
- Have I worn this in the last 12 months?
- Does it fit my current style?
- Would I buy it again today?
If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go.
The item isn’t serving you, but it could serve someone else. Donating keeps items in circulation longer and out of landfills. Every pound diverted is a dollar reinvested into job training, career development, and programs that help Silicon Valley neighbors build lasting stability.
Day 5 – Make Your Closet Work for You
Now organize what’s staying. Try arranging by:
- Color
- Season
- Work vs. casual outfits
- Outfit combinations
A streamlined closet reduces decision fatigue, saves time, and makes it easier to resist buying things you don’t need.

Day 6 – Pack It Up
Box or bag your donations and do a quick check before sealing up. Make sure:
- Items are clean
- Shoes are secured together
- Pockets are emptied
You’re not just clearing space, you’re preparing these items for a second life in your community!
It’s a small gesture that means a lot to us. Every donation that arrives ready to go helps us get it where it needs to be, faster. Thank you for taking that extra moment. ?
Day 7 – It’s Donation Day!
This is when your week turns into real impact. When you donate to Goodwill of Silicon Valley, your clothing and household goods are sold in our local thrift stores and every dollar supports job training, employment placement services, and career development programs for neighbors facing barriers to work, including:
- Veterans
- Unhoused residents
- People with disabilities
- Justice-involved individuals
- Anyone in our community who is unemployed or underemployed and ready to build a career in high-demand fields such as skilled trades and healthcare
Your old denim jacket might help someone land their first job. That’s not an exaggeration, that’s the model.

And while you’re at it? Stop by the store and treat yourself to something new-to-you for spring. You’ve earned it.
