Vocational Training

The Goodwill of Silicon Valley believes in the Power of Employment. Not only has the Goodwill of Silicon Valley provided jobs to thousands of Santa Clara County residents and provided health, housing, and clothing services to the most needy. The GWSV also has created vocational training programs to help people learn the skills to begin careers in  prosperous careers.

Laborers Construction Fundamentals Training Program (16 Weeks)
Students are trained in HAZWOPER (hazardous waste removal, asbestos removal, and lead removal), OSHA, confined space, blueprint reading, traffic control and use of basic building materials. Career opportunities include: laborer occupations, environmental health and safety firms, lead and asbestos abatement companies, material handling opportunities.

Employment Readiness Program (6 or 12 months)
The Employment Readiness Program is a 6 to 12 month paid work experience program that is designed to provide program participants an opportunity to gain retail work experience. In addition, to the paid work experience, each ERP participant receives job placement services and free access to workshops that foster personal professional development. Workshops in communication skills, computer skills, resume writing and interviewing skills.

Vocational Training Program Requirements

A) Must have ability to communicate clearly in English, have basic math skills, and a desire to work in the trades. May be required to lift 70 lbs. and climb ladders, and should not be sensitive or allergic to fumes and chemical solutions. Must be drug and alcohol free! Students must maintain a 90% attendance level.
B) Vocational training programs are open to students regardless of whether they have graduated from high school, and regardless of their eligibility for funding.

Veteran Status (provide one of the following):
  • DD214
  • VA ID card or other official documentation confirming veteran status

  • Verification from the SQUARES system

Household Income (for all household members):
  • Two months of recent pay stubs

  • Most recent tax return (Form 1040)

  • Documentation for disability, pension, or retirement income

Identification & Family Information:
  • Government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s license, or state ID) for each household member

  • Birth certificates or custody papers to confirm dependents

  • Social Security cards for all household members

Housing Verification:
  • Lease agreement, or

  • A letter from a shelter, institution, or transitional housing provider

QUALIFYING FOR SUPPORT

To participate in Veteran Family Services, the head of household—or their spouse—must be a U.S. veteran, and the household must meet low-income guidelines (at or below 80% of the area median income).
