Michael Lavelle is President and Chief Executive Officer of Goodwill of Silicon Valley, a nonprofit social enterprise that turns donated goods into job training, employment services, and pathways to economic mobility. He joined Goodwill on October 15, 2026, bringing more than three decades of specialty retail leadership in multi-unit operations, strategic planning, merchandising, transformation, and growth.

Lavelle began his career in 1992 as a sales associate at Sleep Train, working his way through college. Over 22 years he advanced to Executive Vice President of Sales and Executive Vice President of Strategic Planning, helping lead a four-brand, 320-store organization, and later helped integrate Sleep Train into Mattress Firm. He went on to hold senior leadership roles across retail and consumer products.

As CEO of Mancini’s Sleepworld, Lavelle led a 50-store, $120 million-plus Bay Area retailer through a period of growth while building a stronger, more engaged team.

Service has been a constant throughout his career. At Sleep Train, nearly 20 years ago, he co-founded the Ticket to Dream Foundation’s annual golf tournament, which has since raised more than $15 million for foster youth programs. At Goodwill, his retail career and his service come together: real stores that compete, earning revenue that helps people get trained and hired.

Lavelle earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with an emphasis in marketing, from California State University, Sacramento. His rise from the sales floor to the chief executive’s office reflects the same belief that drives Goodwill’s mission: opportunity can change the trajectory of a life.
