Every April, Earth Day brings people around the world together to raise awareness and take action for a healthier planet. As climate challenges grow and resources become more limited, the need for everyday sustainable choices has never been more urgent.
At Goodwill of Silicon Valley, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Through reuse, recycling, and community-driven programs, we reduce waste while empowering individuals to thrive, always staying true to our mission: Empowering individuals to thrive in Silicon Valley since 1928.
The Roots of Earth Day
Earth Day began in 1970 as a grassroots response to environmental crisis following a devastating oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara. Public awareness around pollution and conservation surged, mobilizing more than 20 million Americans in a nationwide call for environmental reform. Today, it’s a global movement, but its impact still comes down to individual action.
From Awareness to Action
More than 50 years later, Earth Day continues to inspire action. And at Goodwill of Silicon Valley, we deliver through a circular economy that keeps goods in use and out of landfills.
Giving Items a Second Life
Every year, millions of pounds of clothing and goods are discarded. With your help, Goodwill of Silicon Valley gives those items a second chance, while reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and keeping usable items in circulation.
By the numbers:
-
- 36.3 million pounds from local landfills in 2025 (roughly the weight of three Eiffel Towers!)
-
- Thousands of items resold daily across our stores
Turning Sustainability into Opportunity
Sustainability at Goodwill goes beyond the environment, it’s also about people.
When you donate or shop at Goodwill, you help fund programs that:
-
- Provide job training and workforce programs across the regional economy
-
- Connect hundreds of veterans, unhoused residents, people with disabilities, justice-involved individuals, and others often excluded from the job market to employment s each year
-
- Strengthen Silicon Valley by supporting self-sufficiency, reducing recidivism, and lessening reliance on public assistance—benefiting families and saving taxpayer dollars
Take Action this Earth Day
Making a difference starts with simple choices:
-
- Donate instead of dumping: Give your gently used items a second life at a Goodwill near you
-
- Shop secondhand: Reduce demand for new production while finding unique, affordable pieces
-
- Recycle responsibly: Be mindful of what can be reused or repurposed
-
- Choose sustainability daily: Small habits, like reducing single-use plastics, add up
-
- Spread the word: Encourage others to take part
