It’s made mostly with thrifted finds, including a genius turtle shell hack using a roasting pan. Yes, you read that right.

Let’s dive in and make your childhood heroes in a half shell come to life — DIY style!

Start your transformation by hitting up your local Goodwill^® stores. You’re looking for:

A green top (It can be a t-shirt, hoodie or long sleeve shirt.)
Green pants or leggings
Old-school sneakers (Any comfy pair will do, but bonus points if they’re a bit retro.)

This base will give you the right silhouette to start without breaking the bank.

Before you accessorize, it’s decision time. Which member of the cowabunga crew are you?

Since you can’t just thrift a turtle shell (although you never know what you’ll find at Goodwill), this is where you’ll need to get creative. But don’t worry, this isn’t a complicated craft. Anyone can do it.

Supplies You’ll Need:

One large disposable aluminum roasting pan (for the shell shape)
Light green spray paint
Dark green spray paint
Thick black Sharpie or black paint pen
Ribbon or elastic (for straps)
X-Acto knife
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Newspaper or tarp (for spray painting)

Spray it down:
Lay the roasting pan upside down on a tarp or newspaper. Spray both sides with light green spray paint and let dry.
Add depth:
Once dry, go in with the dark green spray paint on the outer part of the shell. This adds that cartoon-style dimension.
Detail the shell:
Use your black Sharpie or paint pen to draw in the turtle shell pattern on the outside —think hexagons or rounded shapes, like a tortoise shell.
Strap it up:
Use the X-Acto knife to cut four small slits — two on top, two on bottom — where your ribbon or elastic will thread through.
Secure the straps:
Thread through your green ribbon and secure the top straps with hot glue to prevent slipping. Leave the ends long so you can adjust and tie or pin them in place later.
