About Carpet Recycle

Over five billion pounds of carpet is dumped into our landfills each year and Goodwill of Silicon Valley, in its continued effort to “go green” wants to help.
We have become a collection and sorting location for post consumer carpet. Which means, all the carpet that would otherwise be put into landfills can now be brought to our collection site and processed for landfill diversion.
When you drop off your carpet for recycle, we can issue a certificate of reclamation listing the amount of carpet diverted which can be used for LEED points.
Unfortunately, preparing carpet for recycle is very costly and that cost must be shared. Because of this expense we do charge a 75¢ recycle fee for every square yard we accept.
Help the environment and the community
While Goodwill of Silicon Valley has many community based programs, the one to note here is the V.I.P program. The goal of this program is to connect with homeless veterans in our community and work with them to get them off the street and back on their feet. We partner with several other non-profits and together the participants in this program will have a place to sleep, a job, and at least one hot meal a day.
All the employees of the carpet reclamation department are participants in this program. Each time you have your carpet diverted from landfills you are helping the environment and helping the community.

How is the carpet diverted?Carpet is made up of a multitude of compounds and those compounds must be broken down for recycle. After the carpet has been broken down the recycler creates plastic pellets from it and these “pellets” are used to make a myriad of products that may end up as car parts or in your backyard as pavers or a retaining wall. While our goal is to recycle all the carpet we collect due to the expense and complexity of the make up of carpet it is not always possible to do so. In these cases, carpet can be used as a substitute for coal in the production of cement. Carpet burns hotter than coal and has much lower levels of harmful emissions than coal. So even though it is omitting toxins the toxins are less harmful than those omitted by the burning of coal.
